Budget and Tax Reform

Budget and Tax Reform Overview
We strive to work towards a long-term solution that restores balance to the state’s budget and tax structure.
We do not support further budget cuts to vital services like education, transportation and public safety. When we cut our state’s infrastructure and services to the bone, it keeps our economy from moving forward.

Tax Breaks for Space Burial for the Wealthy, Education Cuts for Us?
The 2012 Virginia General Assembly session is upon us and it's clear that silly season has begun. You may have already heard that Delegate Terry Kilgore introduced legislation that would provide a tax credit of up to $8,000 for Virginians who want their cremated remains blasted into space on a rocket. If passed, this absurd tax credit will join hundreds of other subsidies enjoyed by the wealthy, while middle class Virginians struggle with more budget cuts.

Surplus Smurplus: Staunton Residents Ask "Where's the Surplus?"
Parents and teachers will gather Thursday in Staunton to collect school supplies for local schools and to call attention to previous cuts to education funding. Cuts in excess of 15 percent which has meant crowded classrooms, outdated textbooks, and reduced student achievement. The state closed last year’s $6.2 billion shortfall almost entirely with cuts and help from the federal government. Only 2 percent of last year’s deficit was made up through new revenue.

Cantor Intent on Downgrading Virginia
Virginia is one of five states that could lose its AAA bond rating thanks to the to the politcal theatrics of Rep. Eric Cantor and his refusal to raise the debt ceiling without draconian cuts. On July 13, Moody's announced that it would assess the ratings of AAA-rated states according to how national default would affect their abilitiy to pay their debts. Due to Virgnia's high level of government workers and contracts, the state would be one of the worst hit by national default. It looks like we might need that Marshall money after all.

Money down the toilet: tens years of the Bush tax cuts
As debt ceiling debate continues, we are marking the tenth anniversary of the policy that created most of the federal budget gap: the Bush tax cuts. On July 7, 2001, George W. Bush signed into law a $1.35 trillion tax cut that primarily benefited the wealthiest Americans while leaving our country with massive debt. Virginia Organizing supporters gathered today in front of Rep. Robert Hurt's office in Danville and the Fredericksburg Public Library to bring attention to the terrible effects the Bush tax cuts have had in Virginia.
